New Jersey, a win, and some corn
We made it out to NJ for the game and all went well. As you probably know Iowa got the win but it was not easy and it was not particularly pretty, (although there were some moments and plays that were very good!). But a win is a win and on the road in the Big 10 we are glad to get home with it and move on. There were a lot of Iowa fans in town for the game and the Hawkeye Huddle seemed to have drawn a good number. But the Friday HH event was in NY and we were not really up

Birthplace of the Game
Brewing coffee at our hotel as we make our own game day preparations and get ready to head out. Flew in last night to Newark, drove past Rutgers' HIgh Point Stadium to check it out, and then hit a little sports bar near the hotel for dinner. All good and now GAMEDAY! We are staying in Somerset NJ, just west of the Rutgers High Point Stadium and are hearts are with George and the Iowa team on their trip east as the effort to rebound continues (as it always does until the nex

The Highest Peaks, the Lowest Valleys
WOW! What a difference 24 hours can make. We go from game 3 aware of stiff challenge but feeling confident the Hawks would get a win, to not just losing but getting handled pretty well. A couple of thoughts as we engage the process of fostering our short-term memory and moving on to game 4.... The Highest Peaks/The Lowest Valleys - So it is with anything that we are truly passionate about. When you fully invest your heart, mind, and soul into a project, effort, whatever, an

Playing National Champions
So this week Iowa Football has the great honor (seriously) to play the 5 time defending national champions from the FCS, the North Dakota State Bisons. While an FCS team (which means they have a limit of 65 scholarships) I believe they are clearly the best team Iowa will have faced in 2016. They will be very confident, as they have won 5 national championships in a row and 13 total in the history of their program. They have been victorious in their last 5 games against FBS

In The Huddle
Well for us Hawkeye fans that was about everything we could ask for. Solid performance from start to finish, dominated our instate rival, got to 2-0, looked good doing it, and no one got hurt. All in all a great second week of the season that helps set the stage for what should be a great game this next weekend against an excellent team in the North Dakota State Bison, which by the way is the first team in the modern football era to win 5 straight FCS National Championships.

A Long History, Iowa v ISU 2016
Just packed the truck and ready for tailgating before the 2016 edition of the Iowa v ISU game! Iowa City is buzzing, sun is out, and looks like another gorgeous day for an electric night game in Kinnick. When I came to Iowa way back in the day (graduated high school from "The" Cedar Falls Tigers in 1977 ; ), Iowa was on the down side of 19 years of losing seasons and under head coach Bob Commings. ISU however, had been doing well and was in the midst of the Earl Bruce era,

Fry Fest, Miami of Ohio, the last of firsts
This week was the big kick off of the 2016 football season and as it has done now for the last few years, this year started with Fry Fest in Coralville. As a former player, and since moving back to Iowa, I have been involved with the Iowa Football Club (IFC) and am now a board member. The purpose of IFC is pretty simple: (1) Support the University of Iowa, its athletic program, and in particular football, (2) Raise money for various children's organizations in the state, an

Open Windows, the Start of a Journey
So the family and I started climbing 14,000' mountains in Colorado back when the kids were little. We did the Presidents, which are three easier climbs all yoked (so you can reach summit on all three without descending all the way to the bottom), and named after former presidents. It got me hooked and since then we keep going back. I think I have either 17 or 18 in now. But I love doing them for a variety of reasons and I bring them up here because I think they apply to li
